The troop of Macaques (aka long-tailed monkey) inhabiting Lopburi numbers in the range of 2,000 and many congregate at the Phra Prang Sam Yod site. There is an annual Monkey Buffet Festival held every November at which the locals put on a lavish banquet (complete with buffet tables loaded with exotic and expensive fruits, sweets and veggies) - a way for the locals to show their appreciation and thanks to the macaques for attracting visitors to the region. The macaques are given free reign of the area - they are everywhere so it’s best to be aware of your surroundings - they love to snatch cameras, purses, food etc. But you have to admit, they’re kinda cute!
